Vision for the City

My Political Vision

Working Families

The interests of working families have always been an important part of my core values and beliefs. A strong middle class is dependent upon good wages, solid benefits, and a safe workplace.

Public Education

It is through education that our people have the best opportunity to elevate their lives. For me, the goal of public education has always been to create a system where ALL children are given the opportunity to realize their full potential

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a serious tear in the very fabric of our communities. For the past 10 years, we have analyzed and talked about the problem but the time for action is now.

Jobs/Economic Development

I am committed to supporting legislation that will always ensure that our State is a strong partner in those processes required to grow our economy and expand our jobs market throughout the State.

Criminal Justice Reform

West Virginia has the second fastest growing prison population in the nation. Regional jail expenses are bankrupting our counties. “In criminal justice reform, we must begin to think smarter, not just tougher,” Laird says.

Other Areas of Interest

Transportation, Roads, Infrastructure

As your State Senator, I will carefully monitor all road projects within our four county region to ensure that we receive our fair share of the funds allocated for this important purpose.

Tourism

It is important for state government to work with entrepreneur and other partners to build and promote tourist destinations that provide jobs, stimulate investments, grow existing businesses, and promote a positive image of our state as a place to visit, go to college, live, work and retire.

Natural Resources

The natural resources of our State are important to our economy and provide many jobs for the benefit of our people. The annual severance tax collections on coal, natural gas, oil, timber, and other resources extracted in our State contribute over a half-billion dollars to our state and local governments.

Population Stabilization

In my opinion, too little attention has been given to the pattern of our population decline in the State of West Virginia. Our continued population decline has many implications for the future of our State.

Ethics in Government
